What’s all the fuss about DIGITAL
& WIDESCREEN (16:9) television?
Currently there is a mix of 4:3 and 16:9 analogue and digital
programming available on Australian television. This is
actually two different issues, one being widescreen and
the other digital trasmission. Most new Australian programs,
and television commercials and an increasing number of overseas
programs are now produced in widescreen
(16:9 as used for cinema),
which is generally accepted to be more visually pleasing
than the current television 4:3 standard.
By the year 2008 all programs will be broadcast as a digital
signal only, so that the Australian standard will be
improved picture and audio quality,
additional channels, multi-camera views, on-screen programming
and closed captioning. This also means you
will need to buy either a new Digital TV, with the advantage
of widescreen (16:9) or a Digital receiver. A Digital receiver
connected to an existing analogue TV set allows you to receive
and view digital television.
